100% Cotton. More Than Just 100% Cotton.

(Fiber Content)
(Raw Cotton)
(Short Staple Cotton)
(Medium / Medium-Long Staple Cotton)
(Long Staple Cotton)
- Supima Cotton(美國)
- Giza Cotton(埃及)
- Sea Island Cotton(加勒比海地區,極稀有)
(Yarn)
✔ Yarn Count(紗支)
- ✔ T-shirt
- ✔ Oxford Shirt
✔ Twist(捻度)
✔ Compact Yarn
✔ Open-end
(Weaving)
Oxford
高密度
低密度
![]() |
![]() |
(Twill)
(Dyeing)
Reactive Dye
Garment Dye
Natural Dye
Pigment Dye
(Washing)
- Garment Wash
- Bio Wash
- Stone Wash
- Enzyme Wash
(Finishing)
(Pattern)
Free Size,
Pattern(版型)。

The same label says 100% Cotton.
One garment sells for HK$199
Another sells for HK$1,990
What makes such a big difference?
Why can two garments made from 100% cotton differ so much in price?
Because 100% cotton only tells you the fibre content—it doesn't tell you the quality. The value of a cotton garment depends on many factors, including the type of cotton, fibre length, yarn quality, weaving, dyeing, finishing, and craftsmanship. That's why two garments made from 100% cotton can feel completely different and vary greatly in price.
When shopping for clothes, one of the first things many people check is the fabric label.
Seeing 100% Cotton, it's easy to assume:
"They're basically the same."
But in reality,
100% Cotton only tells you the fiber content.
It does not tell you the quality.
The true value of a garment lies in many manufacturing processes that you never see.
Let's explore what really determines the quality of a great cotton garment.
1. Raw Cotton
Think of cotton like coffee beans.
They're all coffee,
yet different bean varieties can produce dramatically different quality.
The same is true for cotton.
Not all cotton is created equal.
Generally, cotton can be divided into:
✔ Long Staple Cotton
✔ Medium Staple Cotton
✔ Short Staple Cotton
Short Staple Cotton
📏 Approximately under 25 mm
Characteristics:
✔ Lower production cost
✔ Slightly coarser hand feel
✔ More prone to pilling
✔ Lower durability
This type of cotton is commonly used in mass-produced and budget-friendly garments.
That doesn't mean it's "bad"—it's simply designed for a different market and price point.
Medium Staple Cotton
📏 Approximately 25–35 mm
One of the most widely used cotton types.
Characteristics:
✔ Comfortable softness
✔ Good durability
✔ Excellent value
Many well-made everyday garments are produced using medium staple cotton.
Long Staple Cotton
📏 Approximately 35 mm or longer
Examples include:
• Supima® Cotton (USA)
• Giza Cotton (Egypt)
• Sea Island Cotton (Caribbean, extremely rare)
Characteristics:
✔ Exceptionally soft
✔ Natural luster
✔ Greater durability
✔ Less likely to pill
✔ Produces finer, stronger yarns
This is why long staple cotton is commonly used for premium shirts, knitwear, T-shirts, and luxury bedding.
A great garment often begins with great cotton.
2. Yarn
The same cotton can be spun into completely different qualities of yarn.
Important factors include:
✔ Yarn Count
✔ Twist
✔ Compact Yarn
✔ Open-End Yarn
One common misconception is that a higher yarn count always means better quality.
In reality,
the ideal yarn count depends on the fabric's intended purpose.
For example:
✔ T-shirts
✔ Oxford shirts
✔ Denim
all require different yarn specifications.
The smoothness, strength, and overall feel of a fabric often begin with the quality of its yarn.
3. Weaving
When you touch a garment,
what you're often feeling isn't just the cotton—
it's the weave.
Even when two fabrics are both 100% cotton,
different weaving methods create completely different textures and performance.
Common examples include:
• Plain Weave
• Twill
• Oxford
• Double Gauze
• High-density Weave
• Low-density Weave
Plain Weave
|
Characteristics: ✔ Smooth surface ✔ Crisp structure ✔ Durable ✔ Commonly used for shirts and handkerchiefs |
Oxford
|
✔ Fine basket-weave texture ✔ Slightly raised surface Characteristics: ✔ More dimensional appearance ✔ Heavier than plain weave ✔ Breathable |
Twill
|
Notice the diagonal lines? That's the signature of twill. Characteristics: ✔ Softer drape ✔ Better wrinkle resistance ✔ Comfortable movement ✔ Commonly used for trousers and jackets |
Double Gauze
|
Two lightweight layers are woven together, creating tiny air pockets between them. This makes the fabric especially comfortable in warm weather. It's also one of the reasons why Double Gauze is so popular among Japanese brands. Characteristics: ✔ Soft ✔ Airy ✔ Lightweight |
4. Dyeing
Never underestimate dyeing.
Many premium brands invest significantly more time in this process than mass-production manufacturers.
Examples include*:
• Reactive Dye
• Garment Dye
• Natural Dye
• Pigment Dye
(We'll explore these in more detail later.)
Different dyeing methods affect:
✔ Color depth
✔ Hand feel
✔ How the fabric ages after washing
5. Washing
Many people assume:
"Soft fabric means better fabric."
Not necessarily.
Much of that softness actually comes from the washing process.
Popular techniques include*:
• Garment Wash
• Bio Wash
• Stone Wash
• Enzyme Wash
(We'll cover these individually in a future article.)
6. Finishing
This is one of the most overlooked stages in garment production.
Ironically,
it's also where many quality brands invest heavily.
Finishing directly affects your very first impression when you touch a garment.
Examples include:
✔ Shrink-resistant treatment
✔ Softening finish
✔ Anti-pilling finish
✔ Shape retention
When someone says,
"Wow, this feels amazing!"
they're often experiencing the result of the finishing process.
7. Sewing
Sewing is far more than simply putting pieces of fabric together.
Every stitch,
every seam,
and every construction detail
affects how long a garment will last.
Examples include*:
✔ Stitch density
✔ Seam construction
✔ Binding
✔ Overlocking
✔ Neckline construction
(We'll explain each of these in future articles.)
8. Pattern Making
One question we hear all the time is:
"Why do two Free Size garments fit so differently?"
The answer often comes down to one thing:
Pattern Making.
It determines:
✔ Shoulder line
✔ Sleeve shape
✔ Garment length
✔ Overall proportions
✔ Balance and silhouette
A well-designed pattern doesn't simply make a garment fit—
it makes it look beautiful when worn.
You're Never Buying "Just 100% Cotton"
The value of a garment is never determined by its fiber content alone.

Design
Every step requires
time,
craftsmanship,
experience,
and an uncompromising commitment to quality.
That's why two garments carrying the same 100% Cotton label can differ in price by ten times—or even more.
Because the true value of a garment is often found in the details that never appear on the label.
At Match-it, we believe great clothing is not defined by a label, but by the craftsmanship behind it. Because quality isn't just something you see—it's something you can feel.
